Robinhood Just Built a Blockchain: What Engineers Need to Know

───

Hey,

Issue #016. This week's crypto signal is the main event.

⚙️ AI TOOL OF THE WEEK: Claude for Blockchain Research

The way I put this episode together: fed raw technical docs, the FalconX primer, CoinDesk articles, and DefiLlama data into Claude and asked it to synthesize the engineering-relevant signal. Cut research time from a few hours to twenty minutes. Same prompt structure as EP014: raw context, what I need, format.

⛓️ CRYPTO/WEB3 SIGNAL: Robinhood Chain

Robinhood launched a blockchain on July 1st. In three weeks it briefly hit #2 in DEX volume, flipped Coinbase's Base on some metrics, and pulled in $431M in TVL. Here's what it actually is.

What it is technically:
Ethereum L2 built on the Arbitrum tech stack. Settles on mainnet. Robinhood pays Arbitrum 10% of net chain revenue. EVM-compatible — existing Solidity contracts deploy without modification. 6M transactions/day.

The original thesis — tokenized RWAs:
Stocks and ETFs as ERC-20 tokens. Hold AAPL like USDC — transferable, composable with DeFi, tradable 24/7. Backed 1:1 by real shares held at a US custodian. Regulated. Audited.

What actually happened at launch:
CASHCAT — a memecoin named after Robinhood's mascot — hit $156M market cap. 12x the entire RWA market on the chain. The CEO had called memecoins "a dead end" six days earlier. Same pattern as every new chain launch. Question: does it mature?

Robinhood Earn (the interesting part):
DeFi lending accessible from the main Robinhood app. Deposit USDG into Morpho vaults managed by Steakhouse, Ethena, Spark, and Maple. Advertised 7% APY (underlying ~2%, Robinhood subsidizing the gap). Insured by Lloyd's of London against smart contract exploits. Extremely rare in DeFi. This is how you onboard retail users who've never touched a wallet.

The real moat:
28 million users with KYC done, fiat on-ramps connected, mobile interface they already trust. No crypto-native chain can replicate this distribution quickly.

Base or Blast?
Base (2023) matured from memecoins into a real developer ecosystem. Blast launched with $2B TVL, collapsed to $29M when incentives ended. Staying power depends on tokenized stocks becoming useful as DeFi collateral — not just trading instruments. The chain is 30 days old.

🚀 DEVOPS SIGNAL

Robinhood Chain's node software is open source (Arbitrum stack). Spinning up a full node is a standard Docker + systemd deployment. EP013's Docker fundamentals apply directly. Worth doing for hands-on L2 infrastructure experience.

───

💰 MONEY MOVE

Robinhood Earn at 7% APY on USDG, insured by Lloyd's, accessible from the main app. If you're already holding stablecoins (EP012), worth evaluating as an alternative to direct Morpho/Aave positions — especially if insurance coverage matters to you.

That's Issue #016.

Forward it to one engineer who's curious about Web3 but hasn't touched it yet.
